A Look at the Nicotine Pouch Market

The Nicotine Pouch Market Jul 5, 2020

If you’re not familiar with my previous articles on the topic - to quote Wikipedia -

Nicotine pouches are white pre-portioned pouches containing nicotine but no tobacco and are described as either similar to or a tobacco-free version of snus. No combustion is involved. The user puts a pouch between the upper lip and gum, and leaves it there while the nicotine and taste is being released. When finished, the pouch is disposed of in household trash.

The product is a recent entrant to the UK marketplace - but you’ll find brands ‘Velo’ and ‘Nordic Spirit’ already in newsagents and supermarkets - as well as there being a range of European sellers - and a slowly growing market of UK based business. ‘First Line Pods’ is one of the promising UK businesses.

For me as an ex-retail and now - thanks to nicotine pouches - an ex-smoker - I can see the huge potential in the market. With the perhaps unfortunate but inevitable downfall of traditional smoking we’ve already seen a boom in the Vape / E-Juice market that has literally taken over the high street. The one problem I have with this is (as do many scientists) the number of unknowns and lack of research around what is a very new product. From suspect chemical composition of the products to the unknown effects on the lungs - for me - whilst vaping is no doubt ‘less dangerous’ - it still has a huge number of associated unknowns and potential short and long term risks to help.

Here you see the gloved hands of a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) laboratory technician working with electronic cigarettes, referred to as e-cigarettes, or e-cigs, and vaping pens, while inside a laboratory environment.

For me nicotine pouches mitigate this risk factor, allow me to enjoy nicotine but not have to worry about my lungs or the scary list of chemicals found on vape juice and cigarettes. Plus they’re perfect for the smoking ban too!

So for me it will be interesting to see how the market evolves and how tempted I am to get involved myself! As a smoking cessation aid - it’s more enjoyable than any traditional methods like patches hands down - and offers a menthol taste to those feeling the effects of the menthol cigarette ban. Also - the wide rise of available flavours and it’s ease of use (no stupid clouds of vapour) we could see it start to creep on that massive vape and e-juice market just a little bit...
